How I Work...
Process Overview:
The initial step is a phone conversation about the project-book. Key information required includes:
• Manuscript status—indicate if it is complete or still needs editing, proofreading, or other revisions.
• Book types such as picture book, chapter book, and intended age group.
• Format specifications—full-color cover and interior, full-color cover with black & white interior, text only, or spot art.
• Series status—whether the book will be part of a series.
• Estimated page count—this is usually determined after reviewing the manuscript and placing appropriate page breaks with artwork.
• Desired book size—note that printing options may restrict available sizes.
• Binding type—hardcover or softcover.
After gathering this information, the following steps occur:
• Character development
• Art style selection
• Creation of thumbnails to propose size, subject matter, and placement of text and illustrations
After thumbnails and character designs receive approval, work on the final full-scale artwork starts. Minor revisions to artwork are possible during this stage; however, major changes may incur additional charges.
The cover is typically completed last, with several concepts sketched and presented for consideration. Once the artwork has been completed, a technical specialist creates a high-resolution print file. The finished product will then be ready.
Pricing depends on factors such as book length, complexity of the artwork, and time required.
